Berry's Farm Seed Sack Apron Fits Sizes S - M - L

$60.00

Brilliant colors are still found on the vintage seed sack used for this apron.

Red, yellow and blue combine to create the design for the Iowa-based company that used the sack. From top to bottom, the original print on the apron reads:
Gro-Coated
Trademark
Brand
Berry's
Quality Tested
Farm Seed
Plant with Confidence
Grow with Pride
Harvest With Extra Profit
Berry Seed Co.
Clarinda, Iowa

There also is an upside down stamp on the apron top that reads "5983 BirdsFoot Trefoil," which is a variety of grass. The Bemis bag company logo can be seen behind these words.

Three lines in red are underneath the words Gro-Coated, and there is a yellow sunburst behind the largest lettering. The apron is trimmed in red. To adjust the length, simply place a knot in the neck tie where desired. Cold water wash and line dry are recommended to prevent fading and shrinking.

While the sack used for the apron is in very nice condition, the apron does have a few issues, including general stains as are typical of this age of sack. There is a darker spot at the apron top. Please consider all of these factors before purchase.

The bodice width is 11 inches.
The waist is 23 1/2 inches.
The length is 32 inches from the top bodice center to the hemline.
The waist ties are each 30 inches.
This apron best fits women's sizes small, medium or large.

The A.A. Berry Seed Company was founded in the mid 1880s as a mail order seed and wholesaler to dealers. It was said that the A.A. Berry Seed Company was the largest mail order seed house in the world dealing direct with farmers. The company owned and operated a local radio station (KSO) from 1925 to 1931. In 1939, the founder, A.A. Berry died. In the 1950s, the company opened retail stores. In the 1960s the company closed or sold its retail outlets. Some outlets remained open and did business as garden stores.

The Danville store was one of three in the state of Illinois and in the early 1960s, was sold to Ralph Dubois.  At that time the name was changed to Berry's Farm and Home Store.  A fire in 1975 destroyed the building and brought about a time of change for the company. In 1976, Berry's Garden Center, Inc., was formed, a combined venture of Berry's Farm and Home Store and Lakeview Nursery and Landscape Service, owned by Terry and Steve Light.  Irrigation services were added in 1977, Purina Chow was dropped in 1979, power equipment eliminated in 1981, and a full service flower shop was added in 1999.

* Please keep in mind this apron was created from an authentic vintage cloth sack. Photos show the design and print darker than in actuality. While the apron is described as accurately as possible, due to the vintage quality there may be age marks not noted specifically. Also, finding some or many seeds or feed pieces caught in the fabric is quite common. The bags have been washed at least once and many seed/feed pieces have already been removed, but some may remain.
