This upcycled apron has one of the best designs I have ever seen on a flour or feed sack -- a large flamingo stands on one leg in the water as part of the logo for Flamingo Flour from The Pillsbury Company.
The white flamingo has an orange beak and legs. The water is a light royal blue color and the sky a teal blue color. Another flamingo is in the background. Palm trees and grass complete the scene.
The sack reads:
For Export
100 LBS.
Flamingo
Flour
The Pillsbury Company
General Office
Minneapolis, Minn., U.S.A.
Grace Co
7211/GH
Antofagasta
Cochabbamba
(Antofagasta is a port city in Chile, then the flour would have traveled to Cochabamba in Brazil.)
The apron is trimmed in blue. To adjust the length, simply place a knot in the neck tie where desired. Cold water wash and line dry are recommended to prevent fading and shrinking.
You may notice first that there has been a repair made to a very large rip at the top of the apron (this would have been the top of the flour sack). There are a few frayed edges left but it was the best that could be done with the original materials.
The apron does have a few issues besides the large repair. Overall it is fairly clean, but there are general stains as are typical of this age of sack and some darker spots here and there. There are some some holes on the bodice, as shown in the last photo, that could develop into larger holes. Please consider all of these factors before purchase.
The bodice width is 13 inches.
The waist is 30 1/2 inches.
The length is 32 inches from the top bodice center to the hemline.
The waist ties are each 30 inches.
This apron best fits women's sizes medium, large or extra large.
The Pillsbury website notes Charles Pillsbury started the company in 1869 with a few flour mills on the banks of the Mississippi River. Encyclopedia Britannica notes Pillsbury purchased a share in a Minneapolis flour mill that same year. His firm reorganized in 1872 as C.A. Pillsbury and Company, then was sold in 1889 to an English syndicate to form Pillsbury-Washburn Four Mills Company, Ltd. The Pillsbury family regained ownership in the 1920s, and became Pillsbury Flour Mills Company in 1935. Pillsbury was owned by British company Grand Metropolitan, PLC from 1989 to 2001, when it was purchased by General Mills.
* Please keep in mind this apron was created from an authentic vintage cloth sack. Photos show the design and print darker than in actuality. While the apron is described as accurately as possible, due to the vintage quality there may be age marks not noted specifically. The bags have been washed at least once, but some stains remain.
But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.
