An unused vintage bag from Grimm Alfalfa was used to create this seed sack apron.
In dark black lettering, the apron simply reads "Sealed Genuine Grimm Alfalfa." There also is a marking from the Bemis bag company, the logo with a cat in a barrel, indicating it was the company that made the bag. Cotton webbing was used for the neck strap and the waist ties. Cold water wash and line dry are recommended to prevent fading and shrinking.
Despite being unused, the bag used for the apron does have a few issues. The ink was not dry when the bags were stacked so there was fading on the bag back, which was used to create the sides. This light ink still shows in reverse print. There are four dirt-like marks, likely from how the bag was stored. Please consider all of these factors before purchase.
The bodice width is 12 inches.
The waist is 22 inches.
The length is 28 inches from the top bodice center to the hemline.
The waist ties are each 51 inches.
Please use measurements to determine size. This apron was designed for men, but many women like to purchase these sturdy aprons.
From the Three Rivers Park District, Minnesota, website:
In 1859, immigrant German farmers Wendelin and Julianna Grimm purchased a plot of land in northern Carver County. Minnesota. Among the possessions they brought from their native land was a small wooden box containing the seeds of everlasting clover, which they planted on their farm.
For the next 15 years, Wendelin Grimm collected and planted seeds from the plants that survived the harsh Minnesota winters. This selection practice, called seed saving, resulted in the first winter-hardy alfalfa in North America. Today, Grimm alfalfa is the source of all modern varieties of alfalfa grown on more the 25 million acres in the United States and valued at $10 billion annually.
* Please keep in mind this apron was created from an authentic vintage cloth sack. Photos show the design and print darker than in actuality. While the apron is described as accurately as possible, due to the vintage quality there may be age marks not noted specifically. Also, finding some or many seeds or feed pieces caught in the fabric is quite common. The bags have been washed at least once and many seed/feed pieces have already been removed, but some may remain.
