Certified Ranger Alfalfa seed was contained in the vintage sack used for this half apron. With green lettering, the beige-colored sack was smaller than most so it was just right for a half apron.
This is a very plain seed sack, without a logo. The only other print is in black, numbers and letters at the top -- AR304 and 226. There are two black marks that were either numbers or words, but they were smeared over time and became blobs of ink. So, I decided to cover them partially with wide vintage bias tape in an avocado green color -- one row across the top and two rows across the bottom. The hem is the original skirt edging. The string marks where the sack was sewn together can still be seen. The same marks are on the end of the ties. The ties and waistband were made from another vintage seed sack. The ties are extra long so some might choose to bring them around to the front, as shown in the photo.
A May 1959 bulletin by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln by W.R. Kehr tells the history of Ranger alfalfa:
"Ranger alfalfa, developed at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, has a high degree of wilt resistance and winter hardiness. These characteristics were largely responsible for the superiority of Ranger over other varieties tested under Nebraska conditions when stands were maintained beyond the third year."
The apron waist is 19 inches.
The length is 29 inches.
The ties are 37 inches.
This apron best fits women's sizes extra small to medium.
Cold water wash and line dry are recommended to prevent fading.
* Please keep in mind this apron was created from an authentic vintage cloth sack. While the apron is described as accurately as possible, there may be age marks that are not described due to the vintage quality. Also, finding some or many seeds caught in the fabric is quite common. The bags have been washed at least once and many seeds have already been removed, but a few or several may remain.
